Anderson Breaks Two More Records at Jayhawk Classic

With two more record-breaking runs at the Jayhawk Classic, junior Nickesha Anderson has now set four records in her first four races as a member of the University of Kansas track and field team. KU took home 16 event titles on the day as Anderson was victorious with her school-record 60-meter dash and Anschutz Pavilion facility-record 200-meter dash on Friday.

Anderson actually set the school-record in the 60-meter dash on two occasions. She displaced Tiffany Cherry in the Kansas record book when she crossed the finish line in 7.40 in the semi-finals of the event and then proceeded to surpass her own mark with her winning time of 7.38. Cherry had set the school-record at 7.41 in 2006.

"She was outstanding," head coach Stanley Redwine said of Anderson's performance. "She is very competitive and exemplifies what we are hoping our athletes can achieve. Every time she steps on the track she has the instinct to win and the attitude that she is going to go out and do her very best."

A few moments after her 60 meters triumph, Anderson supplanted a 16-year-old Anschutz Pavilion record in the 200 meters by racing to a 23.85 finish. The previous record had been held by Kathy Travis of Nebraska since the 1992 Big Eight Championships. Earlier this year, Anderson had set a school record in the 200-meter dash and the Anschutz Pavilion record in the 60-meter dash in her first two races.

Senior Julius Jiles also impressed with his NCAA provisional time in the men's 60-meter hurdles. Jiles won the event with a time of 7.91.

"I thought Julius did a great job, too," Redwine said of the All-American hurdler. "This is the first time he has run this fast, this early."

Though already posting higher provisional marks in previous meets, seniors Crystal Manning (triple jump) and Kate Sultanova (pole vault) and sophomore Jordan Scott (pole vault) once again exceeded the NCAA qualifying marks in winning their respective events.

Other women taking home titles from the Jayhawk Classic included juniors Sha'Ray Butler in the 400-meter dash with her time of 56.96 and Charity Stowers in the 600-yard run (1:25.30). Sophomore Lauren Bonds won the 1,000-meter run in 3:00.97 while junior Ashley Brown won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.62 and Kelsey Erb won the high jump at 1.68 meters (5-06 ft.).

On the men's side, senior Matt Baysinger set the Anschutz Pavilion standard with his winning time of 1:20.08 in the facility's inaugural 600-meter run. Senior Paul Hefferon won his second race of the year with a victory in the Mile at 4:18.39 and senior Jarrell Rollins captured first-place in the 600-yard run (1:12.28).

The men and women also won their respective 1,600-meter relays.

The Jayhawks return to action next weekend Feb. 1-2 as they head to Lincoln, Neb. For the Husker Invitational.
