Paul's legend grows in Winston-Salem as activities increase
Chris Paul gets a whole weekend in Winston-Salem these days (plus some). This one was scheduled to begin with a concert Thursday night.
Paul's status is growing by leaps and bounds, now that he's an Olympic gold medalist.
Chris Paul's Winston-Salem Weekend activities began with a concert featuring Ludacris and goes through a Sunday church service and social.
And Paul is bringing along his friends. He has LeBron James and Dwyane Wade signed up along with numerous other NBA players, including Winston-Salem's Josh Howard, whose controversial activities have brought questions about his off-court behavior.
But these activities are carefully designed to make Paul the focal piece. Money raised goes to the CP3 Foundation, which supports charities and organizations in the Winston-Salem area. This weekend is the CP3 Foundation's headline fundraising event.
Paul's ties to Winston-Salem seem tight. He grew up in the area and played two seasons for Wake Forest.
Today is designed as a "day of service"
with youth-related appearances and assisting with Special Olympics athletes along with food distributions for financially strapped families. There's a youth basketball clinic Saturday.
There's another sports twist by Saturday night with a celebrity bowling tournament. That event will be taped for a scheduled EPSN airing next month and it includes NBA players paired with professional bowlers.
Paul's Wake Forest connections came through during a recent Sports Illustrated for Kids photo shoot. The practice courts on campus were used when hurricanes threatening the Gulf Coast caused planned tapings in New Orleans, where Paul plays for the Hornets, to be reconsidered.
